Team Leader Training & Mini Olympic Rehearsal

What does a team leader have to do in the World Camp? This question has come in my mind since I was given this position. On this three-day holiday, we were advised how we should do to win the hearts of our group members and become an effective leader.

In most circumstances, I often work as a leader. However, I don’t think that I am a good one since I cannot inspire others to do what I really want. Mostly, my group members would just finish what I gave them to do without trying all of their effort. I have always told people that I don’t like working in a group because I don’t want to be encumbered. I had been having too much opinion of myself and had trusted only myself. However, the promotion activity which we had to do in groups changes my attitude. I need group members to help achieve our common goal. I cannot achieve it alone without their kind assistance; I even feel that they could promote the program better than I could. Although some of them may have not been very active, the others are very helpful and competitive. Working in this group was a valuable and unforgettable experience.

In the first two days, we had a meeting at 9:00 in the morning and listened to the teaching of the teacher who taught us about the world of mind which is very important in leading people. According to the teaching of the President of IYF in Cambodia and another teacher, being a leader, it’s important that we understand ourselves first before we could understand others. All people basically share the same preferences, for example, they like having lots of money; they prefer to sit in an air-conditioned room than sitting in hot and stuffy room; they want to be recognized and respected; and so on. When we know what they want, we can inspire them by applying the right things. In addition, a leader must learn from other successful leaders and his or her subordinates. Other leaders may have better methods in leading from which we can learn and apply to our group. Some of our subordinates may have good ideas which we can use, so we must pay close attention to them while they are talking. When you respect them, they will in turn respect you too. Many people confine themselves to a box and will never open their heart to other people to enter, so they will not be able to enter other people’s heart either. Between people, IYF teaches us to have a pure heart and communicate in a sincere, considerate way, which is not only an important factor in leadership but an integral element of a successful and meaningful life.

On the last day of the holiday, we went to the Olympic Stadium to have a rehearsal of Mini Olympic, which we will do at the final day of World Camp. This morning we had a very good time playing altogether in groups. Unfortunately our group didn’t win the competition. There were several games which we had to do in groups. The games include: steal the bacon, do mathematics formula, do quizzes, hippo drink, a tug of war, rope skipping, dance battle, and two other games which I don’t know how to call. Totally our group got 255 or so, which fail to reach even the third prize. However, we did enjoy playing together.

Tomorrow all volunteers will gather at NIE at 12:00 before the participants. That will be the first day we will meet our team members and experience the first day of the World Camp.
